Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was managed by her grandmother, mom and godparents. As a young girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford began performing in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy and became part of her portfolio in the year 1996.
